Running out of flooring before a project is finished is a common problem with laminate and vinyl plank. • Measurements. Record plank thickness, width, and length. Note whether there is an attached underlayment pad.
• Material type. Laminate has a fiberboard core. Vinyl plank is usually rigid core (SPC or WPC) or flexible. Products of different types generally cannot be clicked together.

Finding the same product

• Asking the installer or contractor, who may have leftover boxes from other jobs.
• Searching online marketplaces and local classified listings for the product name.
• Contacting flooring liquidators and building material reuse centers.

Blending a close substitute

If the exact product cannot be found, a different floor can often be added with limited visual impact. Common methods include:

• Use a break point. Change floors at a doorway or room boundary and use a T-molding or threshold. This is the most common approach and does not require a click-compatible product.
• Move original planks. Remove original planks from a closet, pantry, or area under heavy furniture and use them in the visible area. Fill the hidden area with the substitute.
• Choose a contrasting floor. A floor that is clearly different, rather than nearly the same, can look intentional instead of mismatched.
• Match the main features. When comparing substitutes, prioritize undertone (warm, neutral, or grey), plank width, gloss level, and edge bevel. These affect appearance more than small differences in grain.

Repairing a few damaged planks

When only a few planks are needed for a repair, a small number of spares is often enough. With floating floors, the planks between the wall and the damaged area can be unclicked and replaced. Preventing future shortages
