Who Makes LifeProof Flooring? Brand and Line History

LifeProof is a private-label flooring brand sold only at The Home Depot. Its vinyl plank and tile are made by Halstead, a company in the HMTX Industries group, to specifications set by The Home Depot. So the short answer to who makes LifeProof flooring is Halstead, and that supply link explains a lot about how LifeProof colors appear, change and get discontinued.

Who makes LifeProof flooring

LifeProof does not have its own factory or a presence at other retailers. The Home Depot owns the brand and sets the product specifications, and HMTX Industries handles the manufacturing through its member companies. When HMTX was formally organized in June 2019, its announcement described Halstead as the leading supplier of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and vinyl plank flooring to The Home Depot in the United States and Canada. A 2020 notice of Home Depot’s Supply Chain Partner of the Year award to Halstead/Vertex said the companies had been Home Depot suppliers since 1980, and named Halstead as the leading LVT supplier under the LifeProof brand.

The HMTX group includes several related businesses:

  • Halstead, the retail supplier to The Home Depot
  • Vertex, the international supply chain arm and a rigid core LVT supplier
  • Metroflor, the group’s own residential brand in North America
  • Teknoflor and Aspecta, which serve healthcare and commercial buyers

Home Depot product pages list Halstead as the supplier for LifeProof vinyl and also for some TrafficMaster and Home Decorators Collection vinyl plank. Different store brands can come from the same supplier, which is one reason a discontinued LifeProof color sometimes has a close relative under another Home Depot label.

Product line history

LifeProof became best known for waterproof rigid core vinyl plank sold in wide, long boards. HMTX has said that, working with The Home Depot, it stopped using phthalates as added plasticizers in its LVT in 2013. Later steps it lists include removing a zinc pyrithione mildewcide in 2019 and certifying its rigid core platform with the Assure program in 2020.

The core LifeProof plank format has stayed fairly consistent. Current Home Depot listings for colors such as Sterling Oak (model I966106LP) and Dusk Cherry (model I06204LP) describe a 22 mil wear layer, 8.7 in. wide by 48 in. long planks, click lock installation and 20.1 sq. ft. per case.

Item Typical LifeProof vinyl plank listing
Retailer The Home Depot only
Supplier listed Halstead (HMTX Industries)
Wear layer 22 mil
Plank size 8.7 in. x 48 in.
Installation Click lock, floating
Coverage 20.1 sq. ft. per case
Example models I966106LP (Sterling Oak), I06204LP (Dusk Cherry)

Many LifeProof model numbers end in “LP,” which helps when sorting leftover boxes or old receipts. Check the full model number on the carton end label, because colors with similar names can have different wear layers, widths or locking systems.

Why LifeProof colors get discontinued

Because the brand belongs to the retailer, The Home Depot decides which colors stay in the assortment. Visuals are refreshed every few years, and slow sellers are dropped even when the plank format stays the same. A discontinued color is usually replaced by a new design rather than reissued, so an exact match from the store is rare once a SKU is gone. Our guide to discontinued Home Depot flooring covers how to confirm a product’s status.

When a color is gone, the practical options are leftover cartons from resellers, salvage from closets or other rooms, or a close match under another Home Depot brand made on the same platform. Matching the locking profile and thickness matters more than the brand name; a plank that looks right but has a different click system will not join the old floor. The same approach works for older TrafficMaster products, described on our discontinued TrafficMaster flooring page, and for the LifeProof Seasoned Wood entry.

Frequently asked questions

Is LifeProof sold anywhere besides Home Depot?

New LifeProof flooring is sold through The Home Depot, in stores and online. Leftover cartons sometimes turn up on eBay, local marketplace listings and surplus outlets.

Is LifeProof the same as TrafficMaster?

No. Both are Home Depot store brands, and some vinyl from each lists Halstead as the supplier, but they are separate lines with different specifications and price points. Compare thickness, wear layer and locking system before mixing them.

Can Halstead supply a discontinued LifeProof color?

Halstead does not sell to homeowners directly. Remaining stock for a dropped color, if any exists, is usually found through Home Depot store inventory checks or secondhand sellers.
